Engineer-it Kit Refill

This Kit is a refill of the genetic engineering kit, the Engineer-it Kit, without any DNA or bacteria (cells).

This science project refill kit can be used for: 

  • completing more genetic engineering experiments with your existing bacteria and DNA program from the regular Engineer-it Kit, or any of the advanced kits,
  • culturing cells that you have already engineered (e.g. you want to pick a colony and streak some engineered bacteria to grow more)

This refill kit is a perfect way to extend biotechnology experiments at home, in the classroom, the makerspace, community center, or in a local biohacking DIYbio lab!

  1. Make selective & non-selective agar,
  2. pour Petri dishes,
  3. streak bacteria using your existing blank bacteria from a regular Engineer-it kit,
  4. make bacteria chemically competent,
  5. engineer bacteria using pigment-producing DNA plasmid (bacterial transformation) using your existing DNA plasmid from a regular Engineer-it kit,
  6. create positive and negative controls,
  7. incubate,
  8. view/analyze results

During this biotechnology genetic engineering experiment, you will refine your skills in genetic engineering, life science and learn how to re-use DNA programs to make with biology.

  • (1) Engineer-it Kit REFILL in Individual size: Sterile water, 6cm Petri dish, LB agar, selection marker, ‘, transformation buffer, recovery media, positive control bacteria stab, DNA plasmid, streaking stencils, inactivation bag.
    • Individual Kits: An individual kit with all the ingredients needed for completing one entire science experience. Great for an individual, family, or a small group — best results using a DNA Playground home or large.
  • Instructions: a manual with easy to understand vocabulary and step by step procedures and an online experiment simulation to practice with, teach you fundamentals, and guide you along the way. Available online. See the Resources tab for links!

The kit must be refrigerated upon arrival for longer shelf life. 

Necessary equipment: Either the DNA Playground (home or large) or BioExplorer or 37 °C incubator + ice bucket + crushed ice + thermometer + hot water bath. 

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included. These supplies are latex or nitrile gloves, a chlorinated cleaner, or a solution of chlorinated bleach in a spray bottle. For more information about safety, set up and clean up, have a look at the instruction manual(s) for your kit or mini lab. 

DNA and bacteria are not included as this is a refill kit intended to be used to extend the Engineer-it kit by using its bacteria and DNA, or to be used with your own DNA program and bacteria. This kit is optimized for use with (friendly) E. Coli

 

Our biotechnology education kits for genetic engineering, the Engineer-it Kits, are a general STEM experience that can be used as a hands-on activity to complement various modules from middle school to high school. They allow for scaffolded and project-based learning and are also used in technical colleges, universities, community outreach programs, summer camps, makerspaces, DIY bio & genetic biohacking labs.
