Which characteristics are inherited, and which develop through experience or our environment?

In TraitSort: Inherited vs Acquired Traits, students race to sort 50 examples into two categories: inherited characteristics influenced by genetic information passed from biological parents, and acquired characteristics that develop through learning, experience, injury, or environmental exposure. From blood type and inherited genetic conditions to scars, learned skills, and sun tans, each round builds a clearer understanding of heredity and variation.

Of course, biology isn't always this tidy! Many real-world characteristics are influenced by both genes and environment, so TraitSort focuses on examples with a clear best fit.

Fast-paced scoring, combo bonuses, and surprise events keep every round moving, while Learning and Challenge modes make the game useful for both learning and review.

This browser-based game is perfect for students exploring genetics, heredity, and variation. It requires no downloads and can be played individually or as a classroom team challenge.

How to play

Drag each trait into the Inherited or Acquired category before time runs out. Correct answers earn points, quick correct answers build combo bonuses, and incorrect answers cost points.

Watch out! A surprise mutation event can knock one of your correctly sorted traits off the board and affect your score!

Mode Selection:
• Learning Mode: Traits are colour-coded by category for extra guidance.
• Challenge Mode: All traits appear in the same colour, so students have to rely on what they know.

Play Style Options:
• Individual Mode: Enjoy the game on your own.
• Team Mode: The game pauses every 20 seconds to allow a new player to take a turn (4 turns total).

A built-in leaderboard for each mode and play style lets students compete against themselves, classmates, or other teams over multiple rounds.
