Solid, liquid, or gas? Sometimes the answer is obvious. Sometimes you have to think about what matter is actually doing.

In StateSort: Solid, Liquid & Gas, students race to classify more than 50 familiar materials and substances by their state of matter. From ice, wood, and sugar crystals to water, honey, oxygen, and helium, the game turns a foundational science concept into a fast-paced sorting challenge.

Students practise recognizing the properties of solids, liquids, and gases while scoring points, building combos, and dealing with surprise pressure-drop events along the way.

Two difficulty levels make StateSort useful for introducing states of matter or turning review into a classroom competition.

This browser-based game requires no downloads and can be played individually or as a classroom team challenge.

How to play

Drag each item into Solid, Liquid, or Gas before time runs out. Correct answers earn points, fast correct answers build combo bonuses, and incorrect answers cost points.

Keep an eye on the board! A surprise pressure drop can remove one of your correctly sorted items and shake up your score.

Mode Selection:
• Learning Mode: Traits are colour-coded by category for extra guidance.
• Challenge Mode: All traits appear in the same colour, so students have to rely on what they know.

Play Style Options:
• Individual Mode: Enjoy the game on your own.
• Team Mode: The game pauses every 20 seconds to allow a new player to take a turn (4 turns total).

A built-in leaderboard for each mode and play style lets students compete against themselves, classmates, or other teams over multiple rounds.
