About the Liquid Density Lab

Stack your science high—layer by layer—and explore the invisible world of liquid density!

This eye-catching experiment lets you explore how different liquids can stack on top of one another without mixing. Students will learn about density by building a “rainbow in a cup” using common kitchen and science kit materials. It’s the perfect blend of fun and discovery!

Each layer reveals how molecules are packed differently in liquids, and why oil floats on water while syrup sinks to the bottom.

What will you learn?

For this one-day science project, you will:

1. Learn about the concept of liquid density and how it's measured.

2. Prepare and color several different liquids.

3. Practice precise pipetting or pouring to carefully layer liquids.

4. Build a stable liquid tower and observe what happens over time.

What's included?

This kit includes all scientific supplies to complete the activity. You’ll only need to provide water.

• The Individual-size kit comes with enough supplies to run the experiment once.

• The group-size kit comes with enough supplies to run the experiment eight times (enough for eight groups of students).

What else is needed?

You need to provide:
• Water
• Paper towels for cleanup

No necessary laboratory equipment is required.

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Cleaning supplies you will need include paper towels and a spray cleaner you have that's suitable for your surfaces. None of the components included in this kit require any special cleaning methods.

For this kit which doesn't include living organisms gloves can be worn but are not required. Wearing gloves is a great scientific habit to take, and can be fun to do but there is no issue with not wearing any.

If you want gloves, you can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.

For more information about safety, set up and clean up, you can have a look at the instruction manual for the experiment linked in the Ressources section below.
