About Bioplastic Kit: Explore & Create™

The complete hands-on experience to learn, test, and build with bioplastics.

Discover how renewable, plastic-like materials are made, and how they might help solve real environmental challenges. This all-in-one kit guides you through a full introduction to bioplastics with five engaging, hands-on activities that explore the ingredients, chemistry, and creative applications of these fascinating materials.

A 6-Part Experiment
  1. Discover – Learn ingredient properties and make your first test samples

  2. Transform: Add texture, color, and mold your own creations

  3. Manipulate: Extrude and weave bio-yarn

  4. Additives: Reuse waste to reinforce your plastics

  5. Usability: Use all your new skills to make an everyday object, a plastic bag!

  6. Analyze: Test and evaluate the physical properties of your bioplastics using guided comparisons

Perfect for classrooms, makerspaces, independent learners, and anyone curious about sustainable alternatives to plastic. No prior experience required—just curiosity and a workspace!

Part of the Bioplastic Kit™ series: explore real science with renewable materials.

🌱 Why Bioplastics?

Bioplastics are plastic-like materials made from renewable sources like plants or food waste, rather than fossil fuels. In this kit, students don’t just learn the science, they create with it. They’ll explore how these materials are made and understand the role they could play in reducing plastic waste and fighting climate change.

What will you learn?

Bioplastic Lab Skills
• How to weigh, mix, pour, and mold bioplastic materials
• How to extrude, color, and texture liquid bioplastics
• How to reinforce your plastics with waste or natural additives
• How to evaluate material properties like strength and flexibility
• How to design and make functional bioplastic objects

🌱 Materials Science & Sustainability
• Identify bioplastic ingredients, their sources, and chemical structures
• Explore the potential of bioplastics to reduce waste and replace fossil plastics
• Understand the limits and applications of bioplastics in real-world contexts
• Build a foundation in green chemistry and biomaterials design

What's included?

• All the tools, molds, ingredients, and measuring supplies needed
• Complete kit makes over 23 bioplastic samples and creations
• Optional ingredient refill pack available (includes all powders, glycerol, and acetic acid)
• Instruction manual with beginner-friendly vocabulary and step-by-step guidance
• Access to an online experiment simulation to preview or practice

What else is needed?

To complete this experiment you will also need:

• access to a microwave or kettle,
• a water source (distilled or tap water),
• a microwave-safe mixing tool (like a spoon)
• a small scale (0.1 g to 100.0 g) if you do not add one from the drop-down

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Necessary safety and cleaning supplies are latex or nitrile gloves, and a chlorinated bleach cleaner or a 10% solution of chlorinated bleach in a spray bottle (you can make this by adding 9 parts water to 1 part bleach in a spray bottle). You can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.

For more information about safety, set up and clean up, you can have a look at the instruction manual for the experiment linked in the Ressources section below, and at the "Practicing safe science" page.
