About the Bioplastic Kit: Weighing & Molecular Concentration™

Get hands-on with bioplastics while learning essential lab skills!

Dive into the world of renewable materials and lab science with this educational, beginner-friendly kit. In just 50 minutes, students will learn how to weigh, measure, and calculate molecular concentrations—all while creating their own sustainable bioplastics.

This kit introduces students to:

  • Measuring and weighing ingredients using lab tools

  • Making bioplastic samples using safe, sustainable materials

  • Exploring how ingredient ratios affect texture, flexibility, and form

  • Molding, dyeing, and texturizing bioplastics with creative tools

  • Understanding molecular concentration and its role in life science labs

No prior experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to explore! This kit provides a solid foundation in concentration concepts (including molarity, percent concentrations, and dilutions) while reinforcing proper lab technique and vocabulary.

Part of the Bioplastic Kit™ series: explore real science with renewable materials.

🌱 Why Bioplastics?

Bioplastics are plastic-like materials made from renewable sources like plants or food waste, rather than fossil fuels. In this kit, students don’t just learn the science, they create with it. They’ll explore how these materials are made and understand the role they could play in reducing plastic waste and fighting climate change.

What will you learn?

With This Kit, You Will Learn:

Lab Skills & Techniques
• How to measure, weigh, and mix powders accurately
• How to mold, dye, and texture liquid bioplastics
• Safe and effective use of lab balances and tools
• Best practices for lab etiquette and material handling

🌱 Bioplastics & Materials
• Identify common bioplastic ingredients, their natural sources, and functions in material creation
• Understand how changing ingredient ratios affects the texture, strength, and flexibility of bioplastics

Scientific Concepts
• Scientific notation and unit prefixes
• Mass, volume, and molar concentration
• Percent concentrations (w/w and v/v)
• Dilutions and solution preparation

What's included?

Bioplastics Lab Kit Materials
• Hands-on activity kit to make and mold bioplastic samples
• Individual-size kit includes all ingredients and measuring tools needed to make a series of different bioplastics
• Group-size kit includes enough materials and tools for 8 lab groups to complete the experiment together
• Comes with an instruction manual featuring step-by-step guidance and student-friendly vocabulary

Teaching & Learning Resources
• Presentation slides (Google Slides format):
• Part 1: Unit Prefixes
• Part 2: Fundamentals & Computations of Concentrations
• Part 3: Weighing Powders
• Educational videos for each part
• Student activities with an answer key (Google Docs format)
• Designed for classroom or independent learning — no specialized lab equipment required

What else is needed?

To complete this experiment, you will also need:

• access to a microwave or kettle to boil some water,
• water (distilled or tap water is fine),
• a mixing tool (like a spoon)

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Cleaning supplies you will need include paper towels and a spray cleaner you have that's suitable for your surfaces. None of the components included in this kit require any special cleaning methods.

For this kit which doesn't include living organisms gloves can be worn but are not required. Wearing gloves is a great scientific habit to take, and can be fun to do but there is no issue with not wearing any.

If you want gloves, you can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.

For more information about safety, set up and clean up, you can have a look at the instruction manual for the experiment linked in the Ressources section below.
