About the ThermoSort: Heat vs Cold game

Explore the molecular effects of temperature with ThermoSort: Heat vs Cold.

Drag and drop over 100 molecular scenarios into the correct categories based on their behaviour in hot or cold conditions. Learn how temperature affects molecular motion and the properties of materials in this interactive, browser-based game. Whether you're studying thermal energy, particle motion, and changes of state or simply curious about the impact of heat and cold on matter, this game provides an engaging way to learn through play.

This browser-based game is perfect for students who want to understand how temperature affects molecular motion and material properties. It requires no downloads and can be played individually or as a classroom team challenge.

How to play

Simply drag each item into its corresponding category box within the 60 seconds allocated. Clear the screen to win! Wrong category? Just drag it to the correct one to fix it!

Mode Selection:
• Learning Mode: Traits are colour-coded by category for extra guidance.
• Challenge Mode: All traits appear in the same colour, so students have to rely on what they know.

Play Style Options:
• Individual Mode: Enjoy the game on your own.
• Team Mode: The game pauses every 20 seconds to allow a new player to take a turn (4 turns total).

A built-in leaderboard for each mode and play style lets students compete against themselves, classmates, or other teams over multiple rounds.

Curriculum Connection – Canada

ThermoSort supports learning about temperature, thermal energy, particle motion, and changes in the states of matter. Strong curriculum connections include:

Alberta Connection (Grade 7 – Heat and Temperature):
ThermoSort supports the Grade 7 Heat and Temperature unit by reinforcing the particle model of matter and helping students connect changes in temperature with particle motion, thermal energy, and changes of state.

British Columbia Connection (Grade 8 – Kinetic Molecular Theory):
ThermoSort supports learning about the kinetic molecular theory by helping students connect temperature with the motion and behaviour of particles in different states of matter.

Manitoba Connection (Grade 7 – Particle Theory of Matter):
ThermoSort supports Grade 7 learning about particle theory, including how adding or removing energy affects particle motion, temperature, and changes of state.

Nova Scotia Connection (Grade 8 – Heat and Kinetic Molecular Theory):
ThermoSort supports learning about heat and the kinetic molecular theory by reinforcing connections between temperature, particle motion, and the behaviour of matter.

Prince Edward Island Connection (Grade 7 – Heat):
ThermoSort supports the Grade 7 Heat unit by helping students distinguish heat from temperature and explore how temperature changes affect matter through the particle model.

Quebec Connection (Secondary Cycle One – The Material World):
ThermoSort supports concepts related to temperature, states of matter, physical changes, and the behaviour of matter within the Material World content area.

Saskatchewan Connection (Grade 7 – Heat and Temperature):
ThermoSort supports outcome HT7.2 by reinforcing differences between states of matter and the effects of heating and cooling on particle behaviour and changes of state.

Curriculum Connection – NGSS

ThermoSort supports foundational knowledge for MS-PS1-4: Matter and Its Interactions, which asks students to develop a model describing changes in particle motion, temperature, and state when thermal energy is added or removed.

By helping students connect temperature with molecular motion and material behaviour, ThermoSort provides useful concept-building and review practice alongside model-based investigations.
