DNA Biomanufacturing Lab: PCR, SOPs & Quality Control Module

The DNA Biomanufacturing Lab module is an exciting, hands-on journey into the world of biotechnology, designed especially for educators and students eager to build their lab skills and explore future career paths. Through a friendly, immersive role-playing scenario, students become part of their own biotech manufacturing team, working together to create and verify DNA plasmids just like professionals in real-world labs.

In this comprehensive 3 or 4-week module, students will:

• Master essential laboratory techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Agarose Gel Electrophoresis.

• Explore bioinformatics tools to confirm the quality and accuracy of their DNA samples.

• Gain authentic commercial biotechnology experience by creating and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

• Understand and implement critical biomanufacturing principles, including Material Control (MC), Quality Control (QC), and Quality Assurance (QA).

Ideal as a capstone project, independent research activity, or professional laboratory training, this module prepares students with real-world biotechnology skills, confidence in lab protocols, and an understanding of industry-standard quality assurance practices. Perfect for up to 8 lab groups.

Biomanufacturing Module Pack includes PCR and Agarose Gel kits (each supporting 8 lab groups) and requires standard lab equipment (PCR machine, electrophoresis setup, pipettes/tips).

Role-play & QC: Lot stickers, final product, sample tubes and bags, hologram QC pass stickers, and role-specific badges.

Required Lab Equipment: PCR machine, agarose gel electrophoresis setup (tank, gel casts, power supply), pipettes, and tips.

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Necessary safety and cleaning supplies are latex or nitrile gloves, and a chlorinated bleach cleaner or a 10% solution of chlorinated bleach in a spray bottle (you can make this by adding 9 parts water to 1 part bleach in a spray bottle). You can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.
