About the Bioplastic Kit: Origami Creations™

Fold your way into the future with flexible bioplastics.

This beginner-friendly kit lets you create a thin, flexible sheet of bioplastic—and transform it into beautiful origami-inspired shapes. In just one session, experiment with renewable materials that mimic paper-like properties and explore how science meets art through folding, shaping, and design.

Whether used in the classroom, a home lab, or a maker space, this kit introduces the tactile and creative potential of bioplastics without the need for specialized lab equipment. A perfect activity to explore sustainability, creativity, and material science all at once.

Part of the Bioplastic Kit™ series: explore real science with renewable materials.

🌱 Why Bioplastics?

Bioplastics are plastic-like materials made from renewable sources like plants or food waste, rather than fossil fuels. In this kit, students don’t just learn the science, they create with it. They’ll explore how these materials are made and understand the role they could play in reducing plastic waste and fighting climate change.

What will you learn?

Hands-On Bioplastic Skills
• How to cast and dry thin, flexible bioplastic sheets
• How to fold, crease, and shape bioplastic materials using origami techniques
• How to explore and evaluate the flexibility, strength, and surface texture of your sheet
• How to preserve or biodegrade your finished creations using an optional activity

🌱 Bioplastics & Material Science
• Understand how ingredient combinations affect bendability and structure
• Explore the overlap between design, art, and sustainable science
• Discover real-world uses for flexible bioplastics in packaging, design, and prototyping

What's included?

• All the ingredients and tools needed to make a flexible bioplastic sheet
• Individual-size kit makes 1–2 origami-ready bioplastic sheets
• Group-size kit includes enough materials for 8 lab groups to each make their own sheet
• Instruction manual with step-by-step folding guides and beginner-friendly vocabulary

What else is needed?

To complete this experiment, you will also need:

• access to a microwave or kettle to boil some water,
• water (distilled or tap water is fine),
• a mixing tool (like a spoon)

Perfect for classrooms, science fairs, homeschoolers, or independent learners

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Cleaning supplies you will need include paper towels and a spray cleaner you have that's suitable for your surfaces. None of the components included in this kit require any special cleaning methods.

For this kit which doesn't include living organisms gloves can be worn but are not required. Wearing gloves is a great scientific habit to take, and can be fun to do but there is no issue with not wearing any.

If you want gloves, you can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.

For more information about safety, set up and clean up, you can have a look at the instruction manual for the experiment linked in the Ressources section below.
