Interested in getting involved in the IGEM Competition and community but unsure how to get started? Get up and running in no time with our beginner-friendly IGEM Starter set, inspired by our work with up-and-coming teams in our community and validated by IGEM graduates.

This set is perfect for students, teachers and mentors that have little or no background. It covers all the basics of genetic engineering hands-on and can be completed in less than a week.  All the hardware, wetware and instructions needed to get started are included, as well as a Q&A session with one our scientists and IGEM alumni.

Engineering and culturing cells is a critical part of winning IGEM!

From there, The DNA Playground all-in-one minilab included in this set can be used with our more advanced kits, the IGEM biobricks or custom science reagents to prototype and create further. The minilab is perfect for students to use on at their own pace as it is safe, friendly and affordable.

The kit includes:

  • 1 x DNA Playground -the Genetic Engineering all-in-one minilab-
  • 2 x Group Engineer-it kit - 16 experiences to practice your team's basic skills, including inserting DNA in bacteria. Also can be used to create your own competent cells and transform your own DNA plasmids. Kits comes with 1 DNA plasmid each to create pigments. 2 of our 10 colors will be sent at random, email us with your order # if you wish to specify colors (Raspberry red, Magenta, Yellow, Cyan, Orange, Teal, Violet, Purple, Blueberry Blue, Blue).
  • Access to the online course Hands-on Biology Lab Skills at home, Real-world project, a 7 lectures course covering theory and lab-skill basics using the DNA Playground and Engineer-it kit. Course by IGEM 2007 alumni and Cambridge University PhD graduate Justin Pahara. (optional)
  • 1 x 20 minute Q&A session with an Amino Labs' scientist over video or phone conference.
