iGEM High School Starter Set

Interested in getting involved in the IGEM Competition and synthetic biology community but unsure how to get started? Get up and running in no time with our beginner-friendly IGEM Starter set, inspired by our work with up-and-coming teams in our community and validated by IGEM graduates themselves. 

This STEM science project set is perfect for students, teachers, and mentors that have little or no background in life science, genetic engineering or synthetic biology. It covers all the basics of genetic engineering hands-on and can be completed in a week.  All the hardware, wetware, and instructions needed to get started are included, as well as the opportunity for a Q&A session with one of our scientists and IGEM alumni! 

Engineering and culturing cells is a critical part of winning IGEM and some of the first science experiments you will learn to do and practice with this starter set. From there, The DNA Playground all-in-one minilab included in the set can be used with our more advanced kits, the IGEM biobricks, or your custom science reagents to prototype and create further. The DNA Playground is perfect for students to use on at their own pace and in their homes as well, as it is safe, friendly, and affordable.
