About the Bioplastic Kit: Make a Bioplastic Bag™

At Amino Labs, we believe in making science accessible and fun for everyone. That's why we've created a kit that allows you to make your own bioplastic bag right at home or in your classroom. With just a microwave or kettle to boil water, you can create a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic bags.

Our bioplastic kit includes all the materials and instructions you need to get started. It's perfect for beginners and experts alike, and it's a great way to learn about the science behind bioplastics.

Here's how it works:

  1. Open the bioplastic kit and gather all the materials.
  2. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided with the kit.
  3. Heat water in a microwave or kettle until it reaches the specified temperature.
  4. Add the bioplastic ingredients to the hot water and stir until it dissolves.
  5. Pour the mixture into a mold.
  6. Allow the bioplastic to cool and harden.
  7. Shape it into a bag.
  8. Voila! You've made your own bioplastic bag.

Not only is making your own bioplastic bag a fun and educational activity, but it also helps reduce your environmental impact. Traditional plastic bags can take hundreds of years to decompose, while bioplastics are biodegradable and break down much faster.

By using our bioplastic kit, you're taking a step towards a more sustainable future. You can use your bioplastic bag for shopping, storing food, or any other purpose you would use a regular plastic bag for.

So why not give it a try? Order your bioplastic kit from Amino Labs today and start making your own bioplastic bags. It's a small change that can make a big difference.

The Bioplastic Kit series teaches educational, renewable solutions to reduce plastic waste and fight climate change. Learn the science that empowers you to be part of the solution and change the world with the Bioplastic Kits™.

What are bioplastics?

Have you heard of "Bioplastics"- plastic-like materials made from non-petroleum sources, like plants and animal matter? Ever wonder how they are made and if they can replace traditional plastics? With our Bioplastics Kit™ series, you'll get all the info and practice you need to comprehend the possibilities and limits of these new materials-- in a responsible and enjoyable way! There's still so much to be discovered in bioplastics; what will you uncover?

What will you learn?

With this kit, you will

• develop some basic skills for making bioplastics objects including how to cast bioplastic sheets from liquid plastics and how to assemble them.

• become familiar with common bioplastic ingredients—their names, the sources from which they derive, and their purpose in the creation of bioplastics,

• be able to evaluate how bioplastic products compare to fossil-fuel products.

• Biodegrade your bioplastic bag (using our optional extension activity).

What's included?

The Bioplastic Kit comes in individual and group sizes suitable for the classroom:

• The individual-size kit includes all the ingredients and measuring tools needed to make one bioplastic bag.

• The group-size kit includes all the ingredients and measuring tools needed for 8 lab groups to complete 8 bioplastic bags.

• This experiment kit includes an instruction manual with easy-to-understand vocabulary and step-by-step instructions. See the Resources tab for links.

What else is needed?

To complete this experiment, you will also need:

• access to a microwave or kettle to boil some water,
• water (distilled or tap water is fine),
• a mixing tool (like a spoon)

Cleaning and safety supplies are not included in the kit. Cleaning supplies you will need include paper towels and a spray cleaner you have that's suitable for your surfaces. None of the components included in this kit require any special cleaning methods.

For this kit which doesn't include living organisms gloves can be worn but are not required. Wearing gloves is a great scientific habit to take, and can be fun to do but there is no issue with not wearing any.

If you want gloves, you can add a Mini Safety Set to your kit which includes gloves and a reusable plastic apron to protect your clothes.

For more information about safety, set up and clean up, you can have a look at the instruction manual for the experiment linked in the Ressources section below.
